Winter Comes
Did winter come early and fast –
like a truck driver making up too much time,
like a cabbie looking for a bigger tip –
or was I just not paying attention?
There's been no time to ease into the cold –
like slipping slowly into a hot bath,
like the long uphill trudge to school –
one day harvesating garden, the next in icy drifts.
I don't turn this corner as quick as I used to –
like the slowest kid at the picnic races,
like an old car with bald tires –
but I'll get there, just in time for summer.
